Mr. Sachihiko Serizawa gave a special lecture on "Constructive Living" in our class.
In my undergraduate advanced seminar, a special lecture entitled "Constructive Living: Learning from Naikan Therapy and Morita Therapy" was given by Mr. Sachihiko Serizawa from the Three Wings Human Resources and Career Research Institute. This special lecture was part of a series of activities involving reading and analyzing psychological literature and conducting data analysis.
Mr. Serizawa has an extensive background as a human resources consultant, involved in activities such as personnel design, career training, and seminars on mental health. Particularly, he draws from the concepts of Naikan Therapy and Morita Therapy, which are both psychotherapies originating in Japan, and combines their elements to instruct on a method called "Constructive Living," developed by Dr. David K. Reynolds. This method aims to apply these psychological approaches to everyday life and work.
Notably, Mr. Serizawa is an alumnus of the former First School of Literature, Waseda University. Although the university has undergone restructuring our faculty, students taking part in the lecture are considered his juniors. My connection with Mr. Serizawa stems from the NBS Japan Society of Speed Reading Education, an organization I have collaborated with for years.
During the lecture, Mr. Serizawa shared insights on revisiting one's own past and reevaluating relationships with others from a perspective of gratitude (Naikan Therapy), and redirecting the energy focused toward the inner self to the external activities (Morita Therapy). He illustrated these concepts with personal anecdotes, suggesting their relevance to both daily life and career development.
Given Mr. Serizawa's shared experience at Toyama Campus, where the students currently belong to, and the content's relevance to job hunting, career formation, and self-management after entering the workplace, the students showed a profound interest and engagement throughout his lecture.
