A research article on mindfulness and psychological health in Japanese working adults during the COVID-19 pandemic has been published in IJERPH.
Based on an online questionnaire survey conducted at the end of September 2020 involving 1,000 Japanese working adults, this articles examined the changes in daily life behavior, i.e., time use and self-evaluation of life behavior before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and psychological health.
While the participants' reports for latter half of the academic year 2019 were retrospective measures before entering the pandemic, notable changes were observed in the former half of the academic year 2020, including increased time spent engaging in remote work, higher frequency of self-reported exposure to COVID-19-related media reports, and altered self-evaluation of smoothness of work, communication at work, and communication with family.
Furthermore, individuals with higher dispositional mindfulness were found to be less likely to perceive higher stress when they felt were exposed to frequent COVID-19-related media reports. Such individuals were also less prone to stress, anxiety, and depressive tendencies when evaluating smoothness of their work more negatively.
Even in unexpected situations like the COVID-19 pandemic, a mindful attitude that involves observing and accepting one's internal and external events "here and now" seems to significantly act as a protective factor for maintaining psychological health.
These research findings were published online in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health on May 19, 2023.
